Norvegian Revivalist Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824) and Roman Pontiff Gregory VII (r. 1073-85)

Visiting researcher Jostein Garcia de Presno from MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society researches the Norwegian peasant and revivalist Hans Nielsen Hauge, who at the very end of the 18th century became leader of the first national, popular movement in Norway. In his old age, he published a History of the Church to enlighten the «simple-minded». His purpose was to explain the decay of the church over the centuries and the need for his own revival. Although Hauge had never been to Rome, Rome’s bishop came to play a significant role in his narrative.
