Three-day PhD-course in cooperation with the Department of Social Anthropology, UiO

This workshop explores how modern notions of ‘heritage’ can be applied to the study of premodern societies and their views on cultural preservation and transmission.

 This workshop will focus on how to write for the public and discuss the role of future academics in public areas such as for example, government, journalism, and public history. Teachers are Nina Burleigh, New York Times best-selling author and journalist, and Nina Kristiansen, editor of Forskning.no. This is a 1 ECTS digital workshop.

What is the role of history in society? How may history help contemporary society deal with major shifts that change societies in fundamental ways? This course will investigate the public role of historians using migration studies as the point of departure. Students do not need prior knowledge of migration history. This is a 3 ECTS digital course. 

How is knowledge produced, negotiated, and mobilized in multilingual settings? The four studies presented in this seminar explore multilingual and multimodal literacy practices from various theoretical and methodological perspectives, and in a range of social, political, socioeconomic, and historical contexts.

MultiLing's Summer School 2021 will take place from the 6th to the 10th of September 2021. The main topic this year will be Open-science practices in experimental psycholinguistics: from research plan to data processing and visualization in R.

The joint module will focus on how to give presentations at academic conferences. This is a 1 ECTS course in Tromsø, in conjunction with the Norwegian History Days.

To comment on the candidates work, we have invited  Dr. Merlin Seller from The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh College of Art, where they lecture in Design and Screen Cultures.

Thesis seminar in area studies organized by Professor Ljiljana Saric at ILOS. The thesis seminar is a compulsory component of the PhD programme. 

The series of Advanced Research Courses offered by the Norwegian Research School in History will delve into a specialized topic and focus on historiography and research methods. This particular course, organized by the University of Bergen and BI - Norwegian Business School, will focus on the different ways that historical studies has dealt with materiality. Update March 19: Due to the uncertainty of the covid-19 restriction moving foward, the course will now be held digital in Zoom. 

Final seminars at IMK give our PhD candidates an opportunity to give a public presentation of the final draft of their PhD thesis before the submission, and get feedback from the opponent.

For more than a decade, scholars across fields and disciplines have mobilized the concept of “the Anthropocene” as the framework for their studies, be it in history, culture studies, international relations, or environmental humanities. On the other hand, as of October 2020, neither the International Commission on Stratigraphy nor the International Union of Geological Sciences has officially approved the term as a recognised subdivision of geologic time.
