Previous structure of the educational component

Organisation

Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History (IAKH) has two separate PhD groups for our doctoral candidates:

• A PhD group for Archaeology & Conservation, led by Senior Lecturer Knut Ivar Austvoll
• A PhD group for History, led by Associate Professor Kristin Ranestad. 

Austvoll and Ranestad are in charge of the midway assessments and thesis seminars. Kristin Ranestad is also the head of the PhD-programme at IAKH.

Educational Component

The nominal length of study of the PhD programme is 3 years. The educational component corresponds to 30 credits.

General initial courses, Faculty of Humanities

Introductory seminar (2 credits), theory of knowledge (2 credits) and ethics (1 credit.

International conference 

Credit for participation in international conferences requires presentation of paper/lecture/abstract/poster. Participation alone does not qualify candidates for credits. A conference is deemed international if it has international participation. 

The total credit score for international conferences is assessed on the basis of whether the paper/poster/lecture/abstract/poster is originally made for the conference and to what extent the doctoral candidate will actively participate in the rest of the conference.

Maximum credits given for one international conference is normally 2 ECTS. 

Credits are allocated based on the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). 30 credits correspond to six months’ work, i.e. 750–900 hours. 1 credit corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of work.

Research dissemination 

Relevant activity includes dissemination courses, articles, chronicles, lectures, exhibitions, etc. The dissemination shall be aimed at the general public outside of the doctoral candidate's own field of research. 

Doctoral candidates associated with the doctoral programme at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History can also achieve credits by writing articles for Norgeshistorie.no.

2 approved articles for Norgeshistorie.no will grant you 1 credit.

The articles are primarily written in Norwegian.

IAKH's thesis seminar

The thesis seminars are designed to be an integral part of the educational component. The department’s focus is to enable all of our doctoral candidates to contribute to and benefit from the thesis seminars, and thereby write a better dissertation because of this effort. IAKH thus encourages all doctoral candidates to actively participate in the seminars throughout their time on the PhD programme.

Requirement for completing the thesis seminar module (6 credits)

• two years of attendance, but active participation for the duration of the programme is encouraged
• 4 presentations (1 oral presentation and 3 manuscripts)
• commenting on all manuscripts presented in the thesis seminars, both orally and in written form

These requirements are in effect from August 31, 2020. 

Seminars missed during the first two years must be completed during the third year. Attendance in thesis seminars at universities abroad may replace our own seminars, subject to approval by the head of the PhD group.

Elective research training courses

Doctoral candidates in Archaeology are part of the international research school Dialogues with The Past.

Doctoral candidates in History are part of The Norwegian Research School in History NRSH.

All candidates at IAKH can participate in relevant elective research training courses (see below for information about pre-approval).

All requests for pre-approval and approval of activity relating to the educational component must be done by filling out the form below:

Application for approval IAKH - Educational component

The Head of PhD-programme is responsible for approving credits, when necessary in collaboration with the relevant PhD leader. All activities should be pre-approved by the Head of Research. The basis for approval are course certificates, certificates of participation, or conference programs. The candidate is responsible for collecting documentation and for submitting the form and documentation to us in a timely manner. 

Where the number of credits has not been determined, for example through an established research institution, the allocation of credits will be based on ECTS. Thirty credits correspond to six months’ work, i.e. 750–900 hours. One credit corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of work. 0,5 credits scores are not eligible at IAKH.

When the Head of Research has approved the request for approval, the PhD-Coordinator will register the acitivity in StudentWeb.

Programme Council

IAKH has it's own Programme Council for the PhD programme. The Programme Council aims to improve the coordination of the PhD programme at the Department. In addition it is a forum where the doctoral candidates can raise issues and be involved in processes concering the PhD programme.
