Changes in the PhD programme plan and supplementary provisions

As part of the implementation of the action plan for the PhD programme at HF, new requirements for the educational component have been developed. These were adopted by the faculty board on 9 December 2022, and will take effect from 1 January 2023.

The educational component will still consist of some joint courses offered by the faculty and some advanced courses offered by the departments. It is also possible to include external courses, subject to agreement with the department's PhD leader. The structure of the educational component will be as follows:

  Faculty                    Advanced
Ethics 1 Min. 1
Theories of knowledge 1 Min. 2
Dissemination 2
Conference   4
Text development   4-6
Methods   Min. 4
Other courses/activities   Max. 11

Numbers refer to ECTS credits

Transitional arrangements between existing and new rules for the composition of the educational component

PhD candidates have the right to be assessed under the rules in place at the time of their admission, but they can also choose to be assessed under the new requirements. All candidates must let their department's PhD leader and PhD admin know which option they prefer by the end of the spring semester of 2023. Candidates who are unsure which option is right for them should discuss this with their department's PhD leader.

The workload for courses/activities must always follow the standards for calculating ECTS credits and the educational component will still amount to 30 credits total. The total workload of the educational component is therefore the same for both options. The following describes how the transition will work for candidates admitted before 1 January 2023 who choose to be assessed according to the old requirements, and for candidates admitted before 1 January 2023 who choose to be assessed according to the new requirements. All candidates admitted after 1 January 2023 will be assessed
according to the new requirements.

For candidates admitted before 1 January 2023 and choose to be assessed according to the old requirements

HF's introductory seminar

The course is discontinued. Candidates completing the old educational component who have not taken the intro course can take two extra ECTS in another optional course category, subject to agreement with the department's PhD leader.

Ethics

The joint ethics course will still be 1 ECTS. The new joint course fulfils the ethics requirement in the old educational component.

Theories of knowledge

The joint theories of knowledge course is reduced in scope. Candidates completing the old educational component who have not taken the old joint course (2 ECTS) must take the new joint course (1 ECTS) and a 1 ECTS advanced theories of knowledge course.

Dissemination

The minimum requirement of 2 ECTS can be met with either the old or new joint dissemination course, or with other dissemination activities/courses, subject to agreement with the department's PhD leader.

Conference

There are no changes in how to fulfil the minimum requirement of 4 ECTS.

Thesis seminar (text development)

The thesis seminar is replaced by text development. For candidates completing the old educational component, text development seminars count towards the thesis seminar requirements. The maximum number of points in the new educational component is 6 ECTS. Candidates completing the “old” educational component can still take up to 8 ECTS in this category, if this has previously been a possibility at their department.

Research training courses and methods

Training in methods is a legally required part of the PhD degree and must always be included in the educational component. In the old structure for the educational component, there is no defined minimum requirement for methods, while in the new scheme there is a defined minimum of 4 ECTS. For candidates completing the old educational component, these courses are registered in the category of research training courses.

For candidates admitted before 1 January 2023 and choose to be assessed according to the new requirements

HF's introductory seminar

If you have already taken this course, it will be moved to the category of "other courses/activities".

Ethics

The old joint course can be included in the new educational component. In addition, candidates must take a minimum of 1 ECTS advanced course in ethics.

Theories of knowledge

If you have taken the old joint course (2 ECTS), this will be recognized as the faculty part of your theories of knowledge requirement. You must also take a minimum of 1 ECTS advanced course in theories of knowledge, for a total of 3 ECTS in this category.

Dissemination

The joint dissemination course is now mandatory. If you have taken the old joint dissemination course, this will be recognized. Any other dissemination activities that have been approved for points can be moved to the category “other courses/activities”.

Conference

Credits completed in this category before 1 January 2023 will be recognized. Please note that the maximum number of credits in this category is now 4 ECTS, and any credits surpassing this amount will be removed from your education plan.

Text development (thesis seminar)

Previously completed thesis seminars will be recognized as text development. Please note that the maximum number of credits in this category is now 6 ECTS, and any credits surpassing this amount will be removed from your education plan.

Methods

The minimum requirement in the methods category is 4 ECTS. Any methods courses/activities that have previously been approved as research training courses can be moved to this category, subject to agreement with the department's PhD leader.

Other courses/activities

Previously completed research training courses, and the introductory seminar if applicable, up to 11 ECTS can be moved to this category.
