Abstract
Memory, and the perception of time, are intricately linked. A scifi author, Ray Cummings, once wrote that “Time is what prevents everything from happening at once”. Long before that, Aristotle wrote: “All memory happens with time. Thus, only animals that sense time can remember, …and they do their remembering using the same organ with which they cognize time.” Aristotle was wrong in claiming that this organ was the heart. He did, however, show great insights in analyzing the links between memory and time perception. We will discuss some of his thoughts in light of what modern neuroscience has taught us about how memory and time are processed in the brain.
