Creating Comics: Between the Observed and the Imagined

Serbian cartoon artist Aleksandar Zograf explains the creative process between imagination, memory and dreams.

In his talk, the author explains the creative process from imagining stories to expressing them in the form of comics, reflecting on dreams and reality, and moving from the present to the deep past. This wide focus reveals how creativity is being used to explore the world that surrounds the artist, and how his life became his art, and vice versa.

Aleksandar Zograf is a Serbian cartoonist, living in the town of PanĨevo, across the river Danube from Belgrade. His comics have been published in Yugoslav magazines since the mid 1980s, and in the early 1990s he started to publish with Fantagraphics Books in the US without leaving his home country. Until today, collections of his comics have been published in France, Italy, the UK, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Austria, and elsewhere. Since 2003, Zograf has been publishing weekly in Vreme, an independent magazine from Belgrade. His comics touch upon different subjects, from dream exploration to the reality of the crisis in the Balkans and from the exploration of finds from a flea market to archaeology. His most recent book deals with the topic of the Second World War and the Holocaust.
