– What are the most important aspects of your job?

– In my job as a media analyst, I assist various companies, organisations and enterprises to understand how they appear in the media. As a media analyst, you are given a portfolio with various clients and you are then responsible for reading, watching and listening to all mention of the clients in both Norwegian and Nordic media. The most important task is then to spend plenty of time understanding both the customer's message, how it is presented in the media and how it can be understood from a reader's perspective. We then send out regular reports to the clients with figures, graphs and analytical considerations and provide them with an insight into the media coverage. The clients then use these reports actively in their communication work, which is very exciting to be a part of!

We also occasionally receive assignments from other businesses that are not regular customers. They often want reports on various promotions they have had in the media, various trending words or, for example, a report on a strike that has received a lot of media coverage. We then help the customers to prepare the media coverage for a given period.

– What do you like best about your job?

– I am very analytical by nature and I benefit from this in my job as a media analyst. I get a good insight into what the Norwegian media is writing about, both on a detailed level, but also on a more general level. I like that very much! I am also creative and I enjoy writing, so my job as a media analyst offers me the opportunity to use various visual tools in the reports I write. It is also rewarding to meet our clients and see how much they appreciate the work we do and get an insight into how they use our reports in their work. Since I have written both a bachelor's and master's thesis on social media, I also think it is very exciting that Retriever is now investing more in this!

– How is the education from the Faculty of Humanities relevant in this job?

– In my education at the Faculty of Humanities, I learned to have a critical and questioning attitude towards society at large, and I think that this is a good quality to have in my job as a media analyst. Being able to delve into different material and then summarize it, is also a skill I have taken with me from my studies. My immersion in media studies also comes in handy!

– What is the best advice you can give new students who are thinking about job opportunities after completing their studies?

– Be forward! It took quite a while before I heard anything after I applied for the job at Retriever, so I sent a message and inquired about how far they had progressed in the hiring process. The next day I was called in for an interview and eventually received an offer of a permanent full-time position. There are often many people competing for the same position, so trust in the knowledge you have and don't be afraid to stand out a little! And remember that all experience can be relevant – it's a question of highlighting the things that may be relevant for your future employer.
