Working with files and tables in Python

This workshop covers how to work with tables and spreadsheets in Python, including reading and writing CSV and Excel files.

Do you want to learn how to manipulate the data in your giant, confusing Excel sheets without even opening Excel? Do you want to automate the extraction and sorting of Nettskjema data? Do you work with tables or spreadsheets in some way, shape, or form and have an interest in Python programming? This workshop is for you!

This workshop gives an introduction to working with tabular data in Python. We will cover reading and writing Excel and CSV files, and creating and manipulating tables from without your Python program. The workshop will also give an introduction to using external libraries in Python, focusing mainly on Pandas.

Target audience

Academic and administrative employees at the Faculty of Humanities who work with Excel and/or CSV files or other forms of tabular data.

Preparations

You will receive an email with information about what you need to install ahead of the workshop.

Prerequisites

This workshop requires basic knowledge of Python. If you have completed the introductory workshop you will have been introduced to the most important concepts. There are also self-study materials available that cover the same topics as the intro workshop which you can work through on your own before attending this workshop.
