Academic interests

I am a historian of early medieval health and medicine. My research draws on a range of disciplines, bringing together textual, archaeological, and (bio)codicological evidence. As part of the MINiTEXTS project, I'll be focusing on 'medical minitexts', such as recipes added to manuscripts otherwise unrelated to medicine. More broadly, I am interested in tracing the movement of medical knowledge and exploring the relationship between medical knowledge and practice. My first monograph, Carolingian Medical Knowledge and Practice, c. 775-900: New Approaches to Recipe Literature, is forthcoming in spring 2024.

Background

Originally from the US, I received my BA (hons) in History and Medieval and Early Modern Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before moving to Cambridge for an MPhil and PhD. I was then a postdoctoral researcher at the British School at Rome, first as a Rome Scholar (2019-20) and then as a Residential Research Fellow (2020-21). Prior to taking up my current position, I held a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship, ‘Crossroads: The Evolution of Early Medieval Medicine in Global and Local Contexts’, at the University of Sheffield.
