Academic interests
My academic interests are business, economic and political history. As a research fellow I am looking into the establishment and development of a battery production company called FREYR Battery. This fits into a larger context of the relationship between business, politics and the green transition.
FREYR Battery is a prominent example of an attempted structural change in the Norwegian economy from large oil dependency to activities that are adapted to a future with low emissions. Late summer and fall of 2023 saw the announcement of major changes in Freyr's structure and ambitions. As a historical phenomenon, this startup is interesting due to its significant and rare financial size among startups, with only a few parallels in Norwegian startup history, including Norsk Hydro in 1905 and Equinor in 1972. The state's support, partly through indications and actual allocated funds, amounting to 4 billion Norwegian kroner and just under 200 million kroner, respectively, represents a level of support for a startup by the Norwegian government not seen in decades, thus reinforcing Freyr as a remarkable historical phenomenon.
