Two research assistants (25%-50%)

Two research assistant positions at BA/MA level (SKO1019/1020) are available for up to six months.

The research assistants will be given a unique opportunity to acquire insights and practical experience in the planning and construction of large, linked databases using multiple historical individual level sources (“big data”). The work consists of building a relational database with GIS capabilities using the data management tool Nodegoat. Main tasks include building a data model and importing existing datasets for the purpose of relational analysis. Tasks related to information gathering (from various sources) and literature review may also be relevant.

About the project

The positions are related to the project Before Copyright: Printing Privileges and the Politics in Early Modern Europe (c. 1500-1800). Before Copyright (BE4COPY) is an ERC-funded interdisciplinary project that examines the long-term history of exclusive printing rights. The research assistants will be supervised by Associate Professor Marius Buning at IAKH. Starting date is negotiable but ideally the position should be filled as soon as possible.

Requirements:

- excellent knowledge of building relational databases (for instance, using Filemaker, Microsoft Access, etc.). Experience with Nodegoat would be a great advantage but is not strictly necessary.

- a practical working knowledge of semantic technologies (RDF, RDFS, SPARQL).

- a willingness to learn about domain-specific ontologies (CIDOC-CRM).

- knowledge of coding languages (e.g. Python, Java, R) is useful but not strictly necessary.

- excellent communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.

- excellent knowledge of English, any other language would be a plus.
