Will Wimsatt, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Chicago, is visiting the Science Studies Colloquium Series. The Seminar is open for everyone. His work centers on the philosophy of the inexact sciences-biology, psychology, and the social sciences-the history of biology, and the study of complex systems.

Torbjørn Gundersen, stipendiat ved Senter for profesjonsstudier ved HiOA, kommer til Forum for vitenskapsteori. Han leverer i 2017 avhandlingen "Epistemiske og sosiale verdier i styring av vitenskap: En case-studie av norske klimaforskeres profesjonelle forståelse av forholdet mellom vitenskap og politikk". Hugh Raffles, professor of Anthropology at The New School for Social Research in New York, is visiting the Science Studies Colloquium Series. He will show a short film, followed by a conversation with John Law. John Law is Professor Emeritus at Open University UK; and fellow at Center for Advanced Study in Oslo, with the research group 'Arctic Domestication in the Era of the Anthropocene'.

Ilkka Niiniluoto, professor of theoretical philosophy, University of Helsinki, and Chairman of the Philosophical Society of Finland, is visiting the Science Studies Colloquium. The lecture is open for everyone.

Niiniluoto has  been rector and then chancellor of the University of Helsinki and has played central role in Finnish politics of science and higher education. As a scholar he has made important contributions to the philosophy of science, its epistemic as well as its social and policy aspects.

Dipesh Chakrabarty, Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor at the Department of History and Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations, and Faculty Fellow at the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory, The University of Chicago, IL USA, is visiting the Science Studies Colloquium Series. In 2015 there are 150 years since the presentation of Gregor Mendel's famous breeding experiments with peas and other plants. While Mendel's results did not have much immediate impact, their "rediscovery" in 1900 formed the basis for the field of genetics and for the "modern synthesis" that remains the backbone of evolutionary biology.

In this one-day symposium we will discuss the historical impact of Mendel's discovery and debate its present-day relevance in modern genetics.
