Eleonora Carinci - Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of Ideas

Eleonora started as Marie Skłodowska Curie Postdoctoral fellow at IFIKK in September 2021. She holds a PhD in Italian Studies from the University of Cambridge and a degree in Italian literature from Sapienza University of Rome.

What are you going to work with at IFIKK?

I will be working on the project “Rethinking Mary in Early Modern Italy: Men’s and Women’s perspectives on the Virgin Mary (1450-1650), founded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the MSC grant agreement 101031720. I will work at the department of History of Ideas with Prof. Unn Falkeid. The project aims to explore the cultural impact of the literary representation of the Virgin Mary in the construction of women’s identity in early modern Italy.

Can you tell us a bit about your research interests?

My broad research interest concern early modern women’s writings and culture in their social, political and religious contexts. I worked on and published articles about various authors including Vittoria Colonna, Chiara Matraini, Maddalena Campiglia, Moderata Fonte and Lucrezia Marinella. My recent research includes the role of women in Renaissance philosophy and science, in particular on the work of the apothecary Camilla Erculiani who published her Letters on Natural philosophy in 1584. My research also focused on culture and philosophy in early modern Italian convents, with particular interest on the figure of sister Felice Rasponi from Ravenna.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like travelling, reading, baking (I always bring my natural yeast with me) and exploring new places and cultures. I love visiting museums and exhibitions as well as enjoying the beauty of nature together with my family.
