Sofie Lekve - Doctoral Fellow in Philosophy

Sofie holds an MA in Philosophy from the University of Bergen and joined us as a Doctoral Fellow in September 2021.

What are you going to work with at IFIKK?

My project aims to bridge a gap between two different fields of research; Medical Ethics and Intergenerational Ethics. In priority- setting in healthcare, we use certain tools to calculate cost-effectiveness in order to determine how to allocate our limited resources in the most efficient way. This is something we all have become more aware of in light of the current pandemic. These tools, such as QALYs (Quality Adjusted Life-Years)  and DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life-Years), are calculated based on potential life-years, and are currently used by the World Health Organization. However, it is not clear whether these tools can be applied to future individuals. I will be researching whether or not the tools we currently use account for future individuals, and attempt to uncover potential asymmetries in our valuing of potential life years.

Can you tell us a bit about your research interests?

Those close to me often joke that I find absolutely everything interesting. This is also the case when it comes to research. Because of this, I am particularly fond of interdisciplinary research. Aside from Medical Ethics and Intergenerational Ethics, I am also very interested in Artificial Intelligence and technology. I hope that the findings in this project also can be of relevance to questions concerning Ethics & AI/Technology.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy spending my free time with friends and family, as well as my puppy, Ciro. I spend a lot of time reading both fiction and non-fiction, and I enjoy watching films. I also enjoy travelling, as my family is spread out in different countries. I hope to be able to travel more again after the pandemic!
