Hugo Ribeiro Mota - Doctoral Fellow in Philosophy

Hugo joined IFIKK in September 2021. He holds an MA in Philosophy from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil.

What are you going to work with at IFIKK?

I am a PhD candidate in Philosophy under the supervision of Joey Pollock. My position is related to her research project New Models of Knowledge Communication which is funded by the Research Council of Norway.

Can you tell us a bit about your research interests?

My research is on social epistemology, focused on deep disagreements and relations of oppression. One of my thesis is that we can describe some types of relations of oppression as deep disagreements in order to elucidate its structure, which in turn would also lead to outcomes where the oppressed would, through their expression of apt anger, make the oppressors see the harm they directly or indirectly provoke and potentially change.

Besides the more metaphysical question on the nature of such disagreements, my proposal aims to discuss alternative methods of communication that go beyond argumentation, as I argue that in some cases of deep disagreement it seems unlikely that argumentation methods would suffice.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love food, either if I am cooking or going to new restaurants. When I am not busy with it, I am probably home with my cats, Hibisco and Lua, or out exploring nature and the cultural aspects of Oslo with my partner, Isabela.
During work or on my spare time, I love listening to music. My preferences can be synthetized by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Radiohead, Milton Nascimento and Jorge Ben Jor.
