Academic interests

My research interests center on the making and meaning-making of artefacts ca. 1200–1600, both for religious (in particular in relation to devotional practices, the cult of saints, and non-consecrated spaces) and secular contexts.

I also pursue an interest in medieval and early modern material culture more broadly, the history and theory of the ornamental, portraiture, the history of dress and fashion, gender studies and historiography.

Current projects include The Silent Sociability of Sculptures in Medieval Scandinavia,  Feather Fans: Gender, Tactility, and Authority in Early Modern Portraiture, and 'All that Arachne's Art Produces Fully': Netherlandish Poet-Painters and Textile Metaphors at the Dawn of a Globalised World. I am also working on a monograph currently entitled Christ Appearing to His Mother in Late Medieval Art. Visualizing the Resurrection across Convents, Parishes, and Courts (under contract with Routledge).

Background

I hold a PhD in art history from the University in Oslo (2013). I have since been teaching medieval and early modern art history (2013-2014) and medieval history (2015-2017) at the same institution and is now tenured senior lecturer in art history and visual studies (2023- ). 

In 2018-20, I was an ERC Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action and NRC COFUND postdoctoral fellow at the Courtauld Institute of Art, and in 2021-22, I was acting as Head of Research and Development at the National Museum of Art in Oslo.
