Carving Time in Greek Antiquity

Filippo Battistoni (Pisa) - Discussant: Ed Bispham (Oxford)

Abstract: More than five centuries separate the Odyssey and the Marmor Parium. If we consider how time is perceived in those works, the difference is substantial. What brought about the change in the perception of time? Historical research led, even forced, ancient authors to create a temporal grid, and that research had an impact on the society more broadly, as it will be shown by looking at a very specific class of documents, that have hardly been used so far in this respect.

The seminar is organized by the research group The Ancient Mediterranean: Archaeology, History, and Society (IAKH) in collaboration with the Classics seminar (IFIKK)
