Gry is associate professor in the philosophy of life sciences at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, and at the Centre for Philosophy and the Sciences, University of Oslo.

Her main research interests lie within the areas of philosophy of biology and scientific explanation, and she has published on heritability, genetic causation, causal explanation in biology, and life science metaphors. She has also ventured into the areas of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), medical research ethics, and trolleyology.

In the AssemblingLife project she is very much looking forward to take on questions about the philosophical significance and understanding of self-assembly and self-organization processes. “I am convinced that a deeper philosophical understanding of self-assembly and self-organization will significantly impact how we understand life, life science and the philosophy of life science”, Gry holds. “I am also very much looking forward to work together with several talented researchers on this project! The first PhD starts up in January, and the first two postdocs and a second PhD will join later in 2024.” In the first phase of the project, the researchers will start working with the distinction (and possible overlaps) between the concepts of self-assembly and self-organization. They will also address challenges to causal explanatory frameworks posed by self-assembly and self-organization and questions about functions at the intersection of chemistry and biology.

When not working on philosophy of science, Gry loves to spend time with her family and to play music on her Hardanger fiddle and traditional flutes.
