About the project

The reception and appropriation of ancient Greek culture in early modern Europe.

How did writers and artists shape notions of Greek language, literature, and culture? Did they understand ancient Greece as part of their own cultural heritage? And if so, in what ways?

The search for answers to these questions is still ongoing. This research project explores a key aspect of it: the reception and appropriation of ancient Greek culture in early modern Europe. It does so from the perspectives of cultural and literary history, book history, and religious history.

Collaboration

The project relies on close collaboration with the University of Cyprus and the University of Franche-Comté and involves several early career researchers at all three participating universities. See the web page for this collaboration (greci-twinning.org). Research conducted at the University of Oslo focuses on the cultural history of Greek learning in early modern Europe.
