Uffe Holmsgaard Eriksen has translated four hymns of the Byzantine poet, Romanos the Melodist (c. 480-560 AD) into Danish in his forthcoming book, Nattens Sange (Songs of the Night, Atlanten, June 2023). It is the first book in Danish devoted to the poet. In the seminar he will introduce Romanos and his poetry and reflect on the problems encountered when translating poetry intended to be sung. The seminar will include a preview of the book, including illustrations by the Danish artist Peter Brandes.
Researcher Biography: Uffe Holmsgaard Eriksen, MA Theol, PhD, postdoc at the University of Southern Denmark. Member of the project Retracing Connections. Byzantine Storyworlds in Greek, Arabic, Georgian and Old Slavonic (c. 950- c.1100).
