CIMS Master Class with Professor Asef Bayat (University of Illinois)

The Center of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (CIMS) at UiO is inviting researchers and students of all levels to a Master Class with Asef Bayat, Professor of Sociology from the University of Illinois.

Revolutionary Life, Harvard University Press

The Master Class will be held at Selskapslokalet, Niels Treschows hus (12th floor) on the 26th of May 2023 from 10.15 to 12.00. The aim of the Master Class is to attract and train highly motivated researchers and students in the political and social analysis of the Middle Eastern region and beyond.
It will consist of an interactive discussion led by Asef Bayat around his book Revolutionary Life: The Everyday of the Arab Spring (Harvard University Press, 2021).  Topics that will be addressed include the relationship between everyday life and revolution, the role of subaltern subjects (women, youth, urban poor, workers, etc) in revolutionary events, and the meaning of ‘revolution’ itself.
The master class is open to researchers and students from UIO and beyond. However, we accept a maximum of 20 participants. In the event of high demand, priority will be given to UiO students and staff. Participants are required to read chapter 1 (“Everyday Life and Revolution”, pp.7-43) and chapter 7 (“The Social World”, pp. 210-234) of the book prior to coming to class. An e-copy of the book is available through UiO Library website.

Asef Bayat, is Professor of Sociology, and Catherine & Bruce Bastian Professor of Global and Transnational Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Before joining Illinois, he taught at the American University in Cairo for many years; and served as the director of the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM) holding the Chair of Society and Culture of the Modern Middle East at Leiden University, The Netherlands.

His research areas range from social movements and social change to religion and public life, urban space and politics, and contemporary Middle East. His recent books include Being Young and Muslim: Cultural Politics in the Global South and North (ed. with Linda Herrera) (Oxford University Press, 2010); Post-Islamism: The Changing Faces of Political Islam (Oxford University Press, 2013); Life as Politics: How Ordinary People Change the Middle East (Stanford University Press, 2013. 2nd edition), Revolution without Revolutionaries: Making Sense of the Arab Spring (Stanford University Press, 2017), Global Middle East: Into the 21st Century (ed. With Linda Herrera) (University of California Press, 2021), and Revolutionary Life: The Everyday of the Arab Spring (Harvard University Press, 2021).
