About the seminar

Turkey, which has been ruled by the neoliberal-conservative government AKP (Justice and Development Party) since 2002, has witnessed an increase in significance of interest-free financial instruments, namely ‘sukuk’.

Although these instruments are promoted by the Turkish monetary authorities for being interest-free, working on the same principle with securitisation, they are far from being risk-free.

In this talk, I aim to show the promotion of Islamic securitisation through direct involvement of AKP government’s pension policies.

With the privatisation of the pension system and individual pension funds, people with religious concerns are directed to invest in Islamic financial securities which might have further implications in terms of risks regarding old-age income.

This event will be held in English and is free and open to all. There will be serving of coffee, tea and pastries.
