IKOS PhD Mid-term evaluation: Writing Waves: An Ecocritical Examination of the Ocean in Japanese Fiction

We want to invite you to an open evaluation with our PhD-fellow in Japan Studies Ingvild Boberg. To comment on the candidates work, we have invited Associate Professor Victoria Young, from the Selwyn College at the University of Cambridge.

The mid-term evaluation is organized in two parts and starts with a 2-hour public seminar, followed by a closed meeting.

The purpose of the evaluation is to assess the progress of the PhD project at a point when it is still possible to make small or substantial changes. In general, we want to know how the candidate is doing, how much work is done, and what is left.

About the PhD candidate and her research

Ingvild Boberg works with Japanese literature using an ecocritical lens, with a particular interest in crises, trauma, and the way we interact with and are interacted with by the environment around us. Her PhD project, Writing Waves: An Ecocritical Examination of the Ocean in Japanese Fiction, examines literature from Japan that concerns itself with the ocean and ocean-adjacent communities.

Her research interests include ecocriticism, Japanese literature, and literature and the body. Other interests include children's literature, horror fiction, cross-genre adaptations, and environmental toxins.
