  Contemporary Arabic speculative fiction, particularly following the Arab Spring uprisings, is often interpreted as part of an emerging trend of Arab dystopias responding to political upheaval. These texts’ ecological concerns, which produce diverse conceptions of futurity, are understudied. This article examines how urban futures are envisioned in an Egyptian speculative fiction text, Ahmed Naji’s Istikhdām al-ḥayāh (2014; Using Life, 2017). Putting Using Life in dialogue with discussions on Gulf futurism and Arabfuturisms, the article first examines the text’s depiction of hegemonic techno-futurist visions, aimed at manifesting a global utopian future through urban design and development projects. The author argues that this futurist discourse, which has affinities with Gulf futurism, operates through the dual enframing of nature and history, and then demonstrates how the text resists this technofuturist vision through an assemblage aesthetics that echoes Sulaiman Majali’s Arabfuturism(s) manifesto. The novel’s assemblage aesthetics, which is central to its conception of counter-futures, redefines the human relationship to urban ecologies and to literature through an emphasis on embodiment.

  Afrofuturism in Brazil operates as a politico-aesthetic subjectivity whose forms of organization intervene in the technoculture of speculative fiction and the rich world’s failure to conceive different possibilities. Operating within the mass-cultural genre system, these communities merge the availability of publishing tools and widespread dissemination of visual and narrative repertoires with the social and political networks honed by their activist predecessors. Considering that Afrofuturism, like other CoFuturisms, has found responses to everyday dystopia or the foreclosure of any other present through solidarity, protest, and resistance, the conjunction of speculative thinking, art, and social activism can be considered a type of social technology or collective “social practice”.

  The first English translation of a cult science fiction favorite by Hemendra Kumar Roy, one of the giants of early Bangla literature, and other sf stories from the colonial period in India. Edited, introduced, and annotated by Bodhisattva Chattopadhyay. Kalpavigyan—science fiction written to excite Bengali speakers about science, as well as to persuade them to evolve beyond the limitations of religion, caste, and class—became popular in the early years of the twentieth century. Translated into English for the first time, in this collection you'll discover The Inhumans (1935), Hemendrakumar Roy's satirical novella about a lost race of Bengali supermen in Uganda. Also included are Jagadananda Ray's “Voyage to Venus” (1895), Nanigopal Majumdar's “The Mystery of the Giant” (1931), and Manoranjan Bhattacharya's “The Martian Purana” (1931).

  A period of extensive modernization efforts in the Ottoman Empire, the nineteenth century is marked by a vibrant culture of social and political critique. Sarıyerli Hoca Sadık Efendi (1826/7 – 1873), a religious scholar and preacher who worked at various Istanbul mosques, was a fervent participant in this culture of critique. Due to the strong anti-sultanate and anti-caliphate sentiments he expressed in his sermons and writings, Sadık Efendi was exiled on account of collaborating with the Young Ottomans. His only extant manuscript, Tanzîr-i Telemak (1870-72), an homage to François Fénelon’s Les Aventures de Télémaque (1699), depicts a Socratic dialogue between an owl and a hawk. The text offers an extensive critique of Tanzimat-era Westernization and offers a detailed vision of the ideal society—an Islamic republic based on the unequivocal economic and political equality of all subjects. This paper will focus on how nature (tabiat) is conceptualized within a planetary and utopian framework in the Süleymaniye manuscript of Tanzîr-i Telemak, which has been fully transcribed and will be published by Alp Eren Topal. Although several studies, such as those of Kaya Bilgegil and Mehmet Kaplan, mention sections of this text, an in-depth engagement with the full manuscript’s implications for our understanding of Ottoman utopian thought is missing. In our paper, we will first examine how Sadık Efendi’s conception of tabiat crosses boundaries both by challenging the nature-culture dualism that underlies modern European political thought and through its planetary vision. Secondly, we will engage with the question of genre and modernity, addressing the possibilities and limits of studying Tanzîr-i Telemak as a utopian text. As a polyphonic work that merges Western and non-Western genres as well as scholarly and colloquial language, Tanzîr-i Telemak resists dualisms also in its form. We will argue that Tanzîr-i Telemak’s utopian imaginary reflects a planetary perspective as it traverses Europe, Asia, and Africa and appeals to a global community of intellectuals.
