Aims phase 1 (1992-96)

• One language: Shona

• Research tool: create basic corpus of computer-stored Shona text, mostly oral material (collected 1992-93)

• Product: monolingual Shona dictionary for inexperienced users, 20 000 headwords, 500 pages

• Training: UZ staff through guest researcher ships

• Recruiting: M.A. scholarships

Aims phase 2 (1997-2001)

• Two languages: Shona and Ndebele

• Research tools: corpora and morphological parsers for both languages

• Products: An Advanced Shona dictionary (55000 headwords), A General Ndebele dictionary (30 000 headwords)

• Training : 2 guest researcher ships per year, 3 Ph.D. scholarships in African linguistics (based on ALLEX Project materials)

• Institutionalisation: African Languages Research Institute established from January 2000

Aims phase 3 (2002 - 2006)

• More languages: Shona, Ndebele and 2 minority languages

• Research tools: make digital sound collection of all oral materials. Enlarge corpora, improve morphological parsers.

• Products: Shona and Ndebele dictionaries of:

Musicology
Linguistics and Literature
Shona Children's Dictionary
Advanced Ndebele Dictionary

• Training: 2 guest researcher ships per year, 3 Ph.D. scholarships in African linguistics (based on ALLEX Project materials)
• Institutionalisation: Maintaining and developing staff competence with a view to self sufficiency from 2006.
