  Denne artikkelen presenterer en metodisk framgangsmåte som innlemmer humoristiske videoinnslag i fokusgruppesamtaler med talere av norsk som andrespråk. Framgangsmåten er testet ut i et prosjekt der vi blant annet har undersøkt hvordan stereotypier spiller inn på språklæring og kommunikasjon blant voksne polske innvandrere i Norge. Dette temaet kan være ganske sensibelt, og for å gjøre det mindre krevende har vi startet samtalene ved først å vise klipp fra tre ulike, forsøksvis humoristiske framstillinger av møter mellom polakker og nordmenn, som alle har vært sendt på norsk TV. Disse framstillingene er – som ofte ellers i norske medietekster – nokså ensidige og basert på stereotypiske forventninger både til kjønn, språkkompetanse, yrke og adferd. Klippene har vist seg å frembringe interessante data som kommer inn på forhold som det i utgangspunktet kan være krevende å dele med fremmede forskere. Å se stereotypier og emosjoner i sammenheng har vist seg å være fruktbart, og vi mener at bruken av videostimuli – og særlig de som er ment å være humoristiske – tilfører en ekstra dimensjon til fokusgruppemetodikken, ikke minst når deltakeres egne erfaringer står i sentrum.

  Studiar av genusendring i norsk har jamt over brukt mykje plass på inventaret i kategorien «ubestemt artikkel», som fleire stader viser teikn til å skrøkke frå tre til to typar. I dei fleste samanhengar vert dei tre typane refererte til som ein (m.), ei (f.) og eit (n.). Faktiske realiseringar som er subsumerte under desse typane, kan vere avgjerande i jakta på endringsforklaringar. Denne artikkelen undersøkjer korleis hokjønnsartikkelen har vore realisert i Oslo gjennom dei siste par hundre åra. Kjeldematerialet er eit breitt utval av litterære framstillingar og vitskaplege skildringar av oslomålet, og korpusdata frå nyare tid. Variasjonen som vert avdekt, er sjeldan tematisert i nyare framstillingar av genustilhøva i Oslo. Den tilsløringa som ei slik subsumering inneber, treng ikkje å ha uheldige konsekvensar for analysane av genussystemet i Oslo, men artikkelen argumenterer likevel for at eit meir nyansert medvit om variasjon i dei språklege realiseringane av artiklane er viktig for vidare genusforsking i andre dialektområde.

  This innovative collection explores critical issues in understanding multilingualism as a defining dimension of identity creation and negotiation in contemporary social life. Reinforcing interdisciplinary conversations on these themes, each chapter is co-authored by two different researchers, often those who have not written together before. The combined effect is a volume showcasing unique and dynamic perspectives on such topics as rethinking of language policy, testing of language rights, language pedagogy, meaning-making, and activism in the linguistic landscape. The book explores multilingualism through the lenses of spaces and policies as embodied in Elizabeth Lanza’s body of work in the field, with a focus on the latest research on linguistic landscapes in diverse settings. Taken together, the book offers a window into better understanding issues around processes of change in and of languages and societies. This ground breaking volume will be of particular interest to students and scholars in multilingualism, applied linguistics, and sociolinguistics.

  This paper examines grammatical gender from the sociolinguistic perspective. The question pursued is to what extent exponents of grammatical gender are tied indexically to identity categories. Building on literature and corpus data, I claim that within the Norwegian context, grammatical gender is associated with sociolinguistic dimensions such as the urban/rural distinction, political views, class, ethnicity. The traditional three-gender system is being replaced by a two-gender system in several dialects, resulting in the loss of the feminine gender. Indexical values associated with the feminine gender features are still valid, though, and some forms take on new pragmatic functions. Once grammatical gender is viewed through a sociolinguistic lens, with the agency of speakers being recognized, it becomes clear that it may not be fully understood without taking into account the context of interaction at a micro-level, and the sociohistorical characteristics of—for instance—regions with language contact at a macro-level.

  In this article, we analyze the use of the term ‘morsmål’ (‘mother tongue’) in official Norwegian documents and in media texts to identify if and how its conceptualization has changed in the era of increasing globalization. Our point of view is explorative. When examining our data, we highlight the importance of reflecting openly about the instability of powerful concepts. We highlight two partly conflicting conceptualizations that we name the ‘traditional use’ and the ‘novel use’, respectively. Building on critical discourse analysis and conceptual metaphor theory we explore how the conceptualizations reveal certain aspects of ideologies and the potential management of multilingualism in society. A broader understanding of how conceptualizations of mother tongue(s) are played out in the Norwegian context may contribute to the dialogue about multilingualism as it is understood and recognized across diverse contexts.

  Although Poles constitute the largest migration community in Norway, they sometimes remain invisibly present in language policies and practices (Opsahl, 2021). Studies have also shown that Polish migrants tend to be stigmatized (van Riemsdijk, 2013; Sapieżynska, 2022), exploited on economic basis (Rye & Andrzejewska, 2010), and overlooked in integration policies, specifically, language courses, which are aimed at non-EU citizens only (Gmaj, 2018). As language is assumed to be crucial for professional success, the knowledge of Norwegian or lack thereof may include or exclude individuals from professional spaces in Norway (Kraft, 2019). This qualitative study (Merriam & Tisdell, 2016) adopts an emic perspective and examines how Polish migrants to Norway linguistically navigate the workplace and make sense of their experiences. Guided by the constructs of linguistic racism (Dovchin, 2020; Olszewska, 2022; Tankosić & Dovchin, 2021) and Whiteness (Andersson & Rye, 2023; Fylkesnes et al., 2024; Thomas et al., 2023; van Riemsdijk, 2010), this paper drew upon narrative inquiry (De Fina, 2021) to gain in-depth understandings of participants’ perspectives and stories. Through convenience and purposeful sampling, 22 participants with a wide array of jobs were recruited, each of whom was of Polish background, was employed in Norway, and used Norwegian at work. The data included semi-structured individual and focus group interviews, surveys, and researcher’s reflexive journal. However, interviews played the leading role as “[at] the root of in-depth interviewing is an interest in understanding the lived experience of other people and the meaning they make of that experience” (Seidman, 2013, p. 9) which aligned with the goal of our work. Findings of this study provide nuanced insights into Polish migrants’ linguistic realities in the workplace. Specifically, the study demonstrated: (a) how participants experienced various types of linguistic racism and (b) how participants responded by either denying, rationalizing, opposing, and challenging linguistic racism. Results of this study can be helpful in addressing Polish migrants' needs in creating linguistically just workplace settings for Polish migrants by, for example, designing and organizing workshops for Norwegian employers. A better understanding of Polish migrants’ perspectives in Norway may lead to a more inclusive integration and better mutual understanding between Poles and Norwegians.

  I dette innlegget diskuterer vi planlagt imitasjon av norsk som andrespråk brukt i humor i populærkulturen. Trekk som assosieres med talere av norsk som andrespråk, inngår i repertoaret til ungdommer i heterogene, urbane miljøer i det som populært er blitt kalt «kebabnorsk». Det dreier seg om både om uttale, leksikalske og morfosyntaktiske trekk, som brudd på V2-regelen eller overforbruk av maskulin genusmarkering. Slike multietnolektiske talestiler er nå veletablerte, og det er ikke rimelig å kalle språkbruken for imitasjon. Det vi skal ta for oss, imidlertid, er tilfeller der multietnolektisk stil blir parodiert for å framheve, utfordre eller befeste identitetskategorier. Helt konkret vil vi ta utgangspunkt i avisartikler publisert mellom 2015 og 2021 hvor søkeordet «kebabnorsk» forekommer, og sammenstille med analyser av videoklipp fra TV-serier hvor imitasjoner av «kebabnorsktalende» personer brukes til å skape humor. Med utgangspunkt i et rasiolingvistisk perspektiv (Rosa 2019), teorier om autentisitet (Coupland 2003; Woolard 2016) og Bakhtins karnevalesk-begrep (Bakhtin 1965, 1981; Kjus 2005), diskuterer vi både tilfeller av naturalisering av sammenhengen mellom språk og kropp, og tilfeller der (meta-)parodiske framstillinger kan utfordre stereotypier og bidra til en denaturalisering av språk/kropps- og språk- /sted-forbindelser. Studien vår kan bidra til en bredere forståelse av mangfoldsdiskurser i samfunnet, særlig om hvordan stereotypier blir (re-)produsert, og maktforhold forhandlet.

  I dette innlegget rapporterer vi fra et prosjekt der vi undersøker forhold som kan bidra til å hemme eller fremme kommunikasjon mellom polakker og nordmenn. Siden vi har ønsket å få fram emiske perspektiver på språklæring, har vi samlet inn data fra små fokusgrupper, der åtte deltagere har delt sine erfaringer med en rekke tema, ofte ved å fortelle historier. Ett av temaene var erfaringer med å lære og bruke norsk, og hva de selv mente de (ikke) hadde hatt utbytte av i undervisningen. Siden det emosjonelle aspektet ved språklæring er blitt etterlyst og etter hvert blitt studert (f.eks. Dewaele 2010; Dewaele & MacIntyre 2016), tok vi også opp dette aspektet i samtalene. Deltagerne fortalte om både gledesfylte og stressende øyeblikk de hadde opplevd som norskinnlærere i ulike situasjoner. Inspirert av Miller og Gkonous (2018) forskning på læreres følelsesbelastning i andrespråksundervisning gav vi i tillegg deltagerne et skjema med 20 følelsesord. De skulle velge fem ord som best karakteriserte de følelsene de har hatt som polske arbeidstagere i Norge, og fem som de hadde hatt fra den første tiden i Norge da de brukte norsk. Vi presenterer resultater fra samkonstruerte narrativer (De Fina 2009) som handler om emosjoner og språklæring, og vi diskuterer valgene av følelsesord som deltagerne mener karakteriserer det å være polsk i Norge og det å bruke norsk.   Emotions, well-being and language learning among Polish work migrants in Norway In this talk, Golden and Opsahl adopt Mercer’s ecological understanding of well-being as both individually and socially defined, “emerging from a person’s subjective personal relationships with the affordances within their social ecologies” (Mercer, 2021, p. 16). They understand well-being as being closely related to emotional aspects of language learning (e.g. Dewaele & MacIntyre, 2016) and to the concept agency, formulated by Ahearn (2001, p. 109), as “the socioculturally mediated capacity to act”. Drawing on data from focus group conversations about stereotypes of Poles and Norwegians, they aim to gain emic insights into some of the affective dimensions associated with the process of acquiring Norwegian among Polish (work) migrants. Their analysis centers on experiences with language learning and use, related to social mobility and well-being, as well as the possibility of practicing Norwegian to gain the ‘small-talk’ competence necessary to ease social inclusion.

  I dette innlegget rapporterer vi fra et prosjekt der vi har prøvd ut en metode som integrerer videoinnslag i fokusgruppesamtaler med polske arbeidstakere i Norge. Til tross for at de utgjør en mangefasettert gruppe, har polske migranter lenge blitt framstilt nokså endimensjonalt i norske medietekster. Både når det gjelder kjønn, språkkompetanse og yrke er det tydelige stereotypier som trer fram i medieframstillingene. Det vi typisk møter, er en mannlig kroppsarbeider med svake språkferdigheter i norsk, som slumser litt med norske lover og regler. Tilfanget av andre identitetskategorier er snevert. I det overordnete prosjektet vi rapporterer fra, undersøker vi blant annet hvordan slike stereotype forestillinger spiller inn på språklæring og kommunikasjon. På MONS-konferansen er det selve metoden vi ønsker å drøfte. Vi har samlet klipp fra tre ulike «humoristiske» framstillinger av møter mellom polakker og nordmenn gjennom de siste ca. tretti årene, som alle har vært sendt på norsk TV. Disse klippene har vi brukt som igangsettere i fokusgruppesamtaler, og de har vist seg å generere et mangfold av interessante narrativer i samtalene. Dette er narrativer som kommer inn på nære erfaringer og forhold som i utgangspunktet kan være vanskelige å uttrykke i møte med fremmede forskere. Videoklippene åpner også for samtaler om møter med det stereotypt norske. Selv om fokusgrupper i seg selv har vist seg å være en fruktbar metode blant annet innenfor sosiokulturell lingvistikk, mener vi at bruken av videostimuli – og særlig de som er ment å være humoristiske – tilfører en ekstra dimensjon. Denne tror vi at flere kan ha glede og nytte av å teste ut. Her ser vi for oss at samtaler om holdninger og forestillinger knyttet til både dialektal variasjon og nasjonale minoritetsspråk kan skos over samme lest. «Hermegåsa kommer» i tittelen til dette innlegget er slik sett både en illustrasjon av at videostimuli kan inspirere deltakere til å dele personlige opplevelser, som kan være vanskelige å fortelle om, òg en oppfordring til forskerfellesskapet om å bygge videre på de erfaringene vi har gjort oss så langt i prosjektet vårt.   We have previously studied conceptualizations of the term 'mother tongue', described how new meanings emerge and take over the 'old' ones, and how there seems to exist an element of tension while the different concepts exist side-by-side (Golden, Opsahl & Tonne, 2020). Now we look into another kind of tension, namely the one associated with the labelling of an entire research field and an institutional perspective. Ever since the birth of our area of research and teaching, Norsk som andrespråk ('Norwegian as a Second (or additonal) Language', some 40 years ago, there has been an element of tension present between different conceptualization -- and the attempts of delimitation of -- the field. This has to some extent been accentuated throughout the lifetime of the MultiLing centre and especially in preparing for its aftermath. We are drawn to these issues by interest of research policies, research identities and self-images, as well as an interest in the goal of theory and theory building.

  The proposed panel addresses the ways in which language and time are not only mutually constitutive, but also critical and as-yet underresearched dimensions of migration and displacement. We examine how contact with dominant sociocultural and linguistic frameworks influence the temporal and spatial trajectories of persons experiencing (forced) migration. Processes of migration, displacement and ‘reception’, as well as interactions with institutions and institutional actors each draw on, and are shaped by, valuations, perceptions and relationships with language and time. Analysing the dynamic intersections of linguistic and temporal frameworks is therefore critical to understanding how people in contexts of migration and spaces of arrival/reception make sense of and navigate related processes of belonging, integration and future-making. As such, the proposed panel explores the multiplex ways in which language and temporal (im)mobility interact within contexts of migration and displacement and across various actors from policy makers, researchers, service providers and local community members, to the individuals living through migration and displacement. The panel combines insights from education studies, linguistic anthropology, sociology and migration studies, and case studies ranging from the experiences of Syrian refugees in Canada and Germany, displaced Chechen youngsters in Poland, and internally displaced indigenous youth in Guatemala. Through the diversity of disciplinary approaches and geographical foci, together, the contributions illuminate how access to sociocultural and linguistic resources engender new forms of mobility and agency, and demonstrate how state policies intervene with migrant (im)mobilities, impacting affective relationships to the past, present and future.
