Academic interests
Miriam Sentler is a researcher and visual artist, working across different fields of the arts and humanities. Her academic interests span artistic research, petroculture studies, GeoHumanities, environmental & blue humanities, mythology, anthropology, art & activism, and new-materialism.
During her Ph.D. in petroculture studies, she researches how mythology is being translated and remediated in Norwegian and British petro-communities in the North Sea. Countering the commercial usage of myth (within the branding and marketing strategies of the Norwegian petroleum industry, resulting in the naming of many oil platforms) the goal of the research is to explore how myth is used for community-building, translation, and activism in offshore, island, and coastal communities in the North Sea.
Background
Miriam Sentler (1994, DE/NL) graduated cum laude with degrees in Fine Art and Artistic Research from the University of Amsterdam (r.MA 2020) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht (BA 2016) and received a certificate in Visual Anthropology from Goldsmiths, University of Arts London (2018).
Her artistic work emphasizes the changing of landscapes, focussing on the cultural and environmental legacy of (fossil fuel) industries and the modern era. Through collaborative research projects, performances, and exhibitions, she deals with questions of belonging, myth-making, imagination, and sacrifice in different (post)industrial and maritime contexts.
