Research/PhD course in writing research: Developing and designing a research project on writing and writing development

In this course, we will present and discuss different methodological approaches to research on writing, as a basis for participants’ work to plan and carry out their own research projects.

Topics
  • Presentation and discussion of different research projects in writing – from Norway and UK
  • Theories on writing and texts, language and text quality
  • Theories on writing development
  • Methods: Qualitative and quantitative approaches, intervention studies
  • Context sensitivity: Relations to schools/HE institutions, cooperation with leaders and teachers
  • Developing and discussing results: How to interpret observations and findings?
  • Publishing and communicating results and experiences – to the research community, to the society, to schools/HE institutions, teachers, and students
  • Doing research in collaboration with schools/HE institutions: Challenges and possibilities
Day 1 and 2 (9 AM - 17 PM)
The NORM project: Methodological and analytical perspectives. Presented by Kjell Lars Berge, Randi Solheim and Synnøve Matre (in a Scandinavian language)
  • The construct of writing – theoretical underpinnings and practical use
  • Research design
  • An ecological approach – and ecological validity
  • A dialogic intervention – how and why?
  • Critical reflections

Discussions related to participants’ experiences, preferences, and needs.

Presentations of PhD-students projects (in a Scandinavian language). Focus on design, methods, and/or (planned) analyses. Discussions – with opponents and audience.

Day 3 (9 AM - 17 PM)

Sinéad Harmey presents on the interplay between different perspectives about writing, research methodologies and descriptions of writing development (in English).

  • A critical review of early writing research methodologies
  • The interplay between methodological choices and descriptions of writing development
  • Opportunities presented by innovative research methodologies including observation, mixed methodologies and close attention to data collection and analysis
  • Findings from observational studies of young writers

Presentations of PhD candidates’ projects (in English). Focus on design, methods, and/or (planned) analyses. Discussions – with opponents and audience.

Day 4 (9 AM - 12 AM)

Overarching perspectives on writing research. Comparative perspectives on different projects and contexts. Presentation and discussion, by Randi Solheim and Sinéad Harmey (in English)

  • Potentials and challenges for further research on writing
  • Potentials for international projects and cooperation
  • Topics of relevance for the PhD candidates

The course will give 5 ECTS for candidates who participate in the seminars, present their projects, and write an essay relevant for the course topics. It is also possible to take part in the seminar without submitting an essay.
