Language and culture maintenance in Wilamowice

The Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian studies, the municipality of Wilamowice and the Wilamowianie Association are collaborating on a project aimed at strengthening and transmitting the endangered Wymysöerys language in southern Poland

About the project

Åshild Næss and Haley De Korne are collaborating with the municipality of Wilamowice and the Wilamowianie Association in a project aimed at strengthening and transmitting the endangered Wymysöerys language in southern Poland, funded by the EEA Program for Culture and Cultural Heritage Management Enhanced  (2020-2024) under the title Establishment of the Museum of Wilamowice’s Culture - Construction of the Museum of Vilamovian Culture building (Utworzenie Muzeum Kultury Wilamowskiej w Wilamowicach - Budowa budynku Muzeum Kultury Wilamowskiej). Project activities include scholarly exchange with researchers in the Wilamowianie Association, and the involvement of MA students from the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies in projects related to the language. The start of the project was delayed, but is now underway.

Activities

2022
Visit of Åshild Næss and Haley De Korne to Wilamowice for meetings with all project partners. Public presentation on 'Language diversity in Norway and beyond' held for members of the Wilamowice community in English, with interpretation to Polish. (November 2022)
2023
Visit of Wilamowianie Association members to the University of Oslo to teach and hold a guest lecture.
2024
Involvement of Masters students from the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies in research on Wymysöerys.
Study Visit (23-26 February) in Wilamowice
