Periodisk evalueringsrapport for LING1111 Fonetikk og fonologi 1, Høst 2018

LING1111

The course was taught using the phonetics & phonology textbook by Elizabeth Zsiga (2013), which worked well, overall. (This textbook has also been used in H17, H14, and H13.) Attendance was good throughout the semester. 52 students showed up at the beginning of the semester, and most of them came to class regularly, which indicates that the students were satisfied with the course, the reading and the quality of teaching.

At the end of the semester, students were asked to fill out an evaluation form via nettskjema. In total, 24 students filled out the evaluation form (i.e., approximately half of the students); overall, the students’ evaluations and comments were very positive (with 22 students reporting that they were satisfied/very satisfied, and only 2 students reporting that they were not satisfied). Several students wrote that the teaching could not have been any better. As for the more critical comments, some students asked for a rebalancing along the following lines: the reading (pensum) should be reduced in breadth (e.g., by skipping some of the less central chapters in the textbook), and, instead, practical exercises in class should be increased; this is feasible and worth considering for the next time this class is taught.

A majority of students (11 students / 45,8%) would prefer a 3-day home examination instead of a written examination (compared to 5 students who are satisfied with the written examination, 5 students who would prefer a term paper, and 3 students who would prefer an oral examination).

The information on the webpage was considered to be good by the majority of students (between 15 and 18, depending on the type of online information to be evaluated) and sufficient by the rest (6 to 8 students). None of the students considered the online information to be poor.

Out of the 55 students who were registered, 49 students submitted and passed the kvalifiseringsoppgave. In December, 37 students took the exam, of which 35 students passed. The average grade amounted to a C. Two students took a makeup exam in January. Overall, these numbers indicate that the course was successful. The course was organized similarly in Høst 2017 (but without student evaluations), and the numbers/results were similar.
