  Argues that concern with the nation and national community will be a key factor in redefining twenty-first-century politics. Bringing the Nation Back In takes as its starting point a series of developments that shaped politics in the United States and Europe over the past thirty years: the end of the Cold War, the rise of financial and economic globalization, the creation of the European Union, and the development of the postnational. This book contends we are now witnessing a break with the post-1945 world order and with modern politics. Two competing ideas have arisen—global cosmopolitanism and populist nationalism. Contributors argue this polarization of social ethos between cosmopolitanism and nationalism is a sign of a deeper political crisis, which they explore from different perspectives. Rather than taking sides, the aim is to diagnose the origins of the current impasse and to “bring the nation back in” by expanding what we mean by “nation” and national identity and by respecting the localizing processes that have led to national traditions and struggles.

  "We are privileged to meet in the heart of the new Europe in what is arguably the world's most beautiful city whose style and grace represents the European past and whose dynamism may well represent the European future," Luccarelli says. Few places better reflect the diverse perceptions of America, he adds. "Half the world -- and especially the U.S.A.'s former European allies -- thinks America is crazed by its lust for power, while the other half -- including many of the European states formerly allied to the U.S.S.R. -- is bound and determined to latch on to what they see as a process of globalization, in which the one indispensable player is the United States. That divide runs right through the nations represented at the EAAS."

  As I write, the world appears close to the brink of war. American troops are apparently poised to invade Iraq, with or without UN sanction. The relation between the United States and its European allies over this issue is strained, to say the least, as indicated by the usually compliant German chancellor¿s sharp criticism of American foreign policy. But more importantly, the Iraq is just one in a series of policy disagreements which divide the United States from the rest of the world, and even from its closest allies in Europe. And the disagreements are most pronounced when we consider public opinion in Europe. America may still have the support¿stated or otherwise¿of many European governments, but even in the usually reliable UK, public opinion has swung against the invasion of Iraq in particular and against the direction of American foreign policy in general.
