  Phonological variation forms an integrated part of language acquisition, and one important challenge for learners of French as a post-L1 language concerns schwa alternation, in perception as well as production. This paper presents a first analysis of the behavior of schwa in conversational speech in two Norwegian learner corpora, and tests the hypothesis whereby the acquisition of the phonological variable depends on phonotactic structure and frequency. The examination of the learners’ productions indicates that even at an advanced level, they are far from mastering the target system, which encourages a more explicit exposition in the classroom to the factors conditioning schwa alternation.

  Given that their L1, Norwegian, and their L2, English, are lexical stress languages, Norwegian speakers will equally tend to stress lexical words during the course of acquisition of L3 French, insuring the prosodic autonomy of each word. In the present paper, we show that this strategy slows down the acquisition of two external sandhi phenomena in French, i.e. liaison and final consonant linking. The data, taken from two corpora recently collected in Tromsø and Oslo, indicate that the learners' acquisition path is conditioned by internal factors like prosodic weight, perceptual salience and frequency, and by external factors like the different tasks to be completed, i.e. reading vs conversation. The data further indicate that liaisons following determiners and clitics are the first categories to be acquired and that spontaneous speech, where the learner does not have direct access to the graphic word, seems to favor erasing the prosodic boundaries required by the prosodic system of her L1.

  Paul Passy (1859-1940) is well-known for his role in the setting up of the International Phonetic Association and its phonetic alphabet as well as for his description of French, through Les sons du français (first edition 1887) and a wide range of other publications (Galazzi 2002, Durand & Lyche 2019, 2020, in press a,b). Less well-known is his influential role in advocating a phonetic approach to the teaching of English in France in the late 19th century. After a brief examination of the situation concerning the teaching of foreign languages in France in the last decades of the nineteenth century, we examine Passy’s two pronged attack on the question of teaching foreign languages in a school environment. First, a recourse to only phonetic transcriptions was advocated at the ab initio stage. This was defended in 1882 in two textbooks by Passy that appeared simultaneously and where the phonetic transcription is based on a system devised by Isaac Pitman: Premiers éléments de langue anglaise, grammaire, thèmes, versions à l'usage de la classe préparatoire et de la classe de huitième, and L'Anglais parlé, ou Méthode pratique pour apprendre à parler, à comprendre et à lire en anglais sans maître. Second, Passy also outlined his own brand of the ‘Direct Method’ in De la méthode directe dans l’enseignement des langues vivantes which obtained the second prize in the 1898 concours of the ‘Société pour la propagation des langues étrangères en France’. Passy’s advocacy of ‘only phonetic symbols for initial learners’ failed to secure the support of many contemporaries engaged in the same battle (in particular the grand old man of English linguistics in Western Europe, the Norwegian Johan Storm – see Linn 2004), and it was proposed at a time when the IPA approach was far from settled (with many reservations from a range of famous linguists). But his version of the direct method, in fact, did not rest on the use of phonetic symbols as a necessary basis and has suffered from caricatures ever since it was launched (including often quoted surveys like Germain 1993). Our aim is to show that there were valuable insights in Passy’s recommendations and that the Direct Method was never conceived as the be-all-and-end-all of the learning of foreign languages. A proper historical perspective on the work of Passy and his contemporaries suggests that, given the theoretical and descriptive tools at their disposal in the late nineteenth century and the more general sociopedagogical context, there was much of lasting value in the goals they were setting for the teaching of foreign languages .

  According to Bayley and Regan (2004), the mastery of phonological variation forms an integrated part of the competence of the post-L1 speaker who aims a near-native production. In French, two phonological variables are acquired rather late, i.e. liaison and schwa. Both involve deletion of word boundaries which complicates lexical recognition, as well as sensitivity to register and modality. The two phenomena do however vary in that liaison - with inter-vocalic consonant realization - doesn't entail additional difficulty for production, while schwa, when absent, creates consonant sequences often not perceived and difficult to produce. While post-L1 acquisition of liaison is rather extensively studied, schwa is not, which according to Hannahs (2007) might reflect the complexity of the influencing factors. We know however, from L1 studies, that phonotactic constraints, on the syllabic as well as the segmental level, do influence schwa alternation (for an overview, see Andreassen, 2013), and in this paper, we present a first, detailed study of Norwegian learners of French, which aims to understand the importance of phonotactics during post-L1 acquisition. The study is based on conversational data from two corpora of Norwegian learners of French, 16 informants from Tromsø, proficiency level A2, and 8 informants from Oslo, proficiency level B1/B2. Schwa behavior is extracted using the newly developed IPFC schwa coding system (Isely et al., 2017), of which a pilot has already been tested on parts of the Norwegian learner data by Andreassen and Lyche (2016). While the latter, initial analysis indicates a gradual sensibility towards phonotactic context, other factors such as frequency and access to written representations are observed as playing an important role. In this paper, we aim to identify an acquisitional path by going in detail into the phonotactic context of schwa and how it behaves, as well as the realization of the secondary cluster in the case of schwa absence. To detect L1 influence, we take into account L1 phonotactic as well as prosodic constraints. To determine sensibility towards phonological variation in general, we take into account previous analyses of liaison in the same corpora (Andreassen & Lyche, 2015).

  In French, the output quality of the mid vowels /E, Ø, O/ is to a large extent governed by the “Loi de Position”, whereby the close-mid variant [e, ø, o] is selected in open syllables, and the open-mid variant [ɛ, œ, ɔ] is selected in closed syllables, e.g. pot [po] ‘jar’ vs. port [pɔːʁ] ‘harbour’ (for more details, cf. Féry, 2003). Vowel lengthening is phonetic and triggered by a limited group of consonants, i.e. [v, z, ʒ, ʁ]. In Norwegian, on the other hand, the output quality depends on phonological duration: long vowels are realised [e, ø, o] while short vowels are realised [ɛ, œ, ɔ], e.g. få [foː] ‘get-inf’ vs. fått [fɔt] ‘get-perf.part’ (for more details, cf. Kristoffersen, 2000). The two languages also differ when it comes to positioning in the vowel space: while the series of unrounded vowels [e, ɛ] is well dispersed in both languages, the two series of rounded vowels – [o, ɔ] and [ø, œ] – are far less spread in Norwegian than in French (Kloster-Jensen, 1955; Kristoffersen, 2000). Norwegian learners of French are thus faced with challenges on two different levels of analysis, phonological and phonetic, a situation which is further complicated by current pedagogical methods that fail to train the perception and production of fine-grained vocalic variation. In view of this, one should expect learners of French with little exposure to authentic speech, to use their L1 system when practicing the foreign language. This paper presents learner data from Tromsø and Oslo, which represent students at an A2 vs. B1/B2 level, respectively. Using the interview guide established by the research programme IPFC: Interphonologie du français contemporain (Detey & Kawaguchi, 2008), the dataset contains both read and spontaneous speech. The main objective of this work – which draws on Andreassen and Lyche (2014) – is to identify the level and types of transfer involved in the acquisition of mid vowels. To achieve this goal, we first test the hypothesis whereby the beginner-level students in Tromsø maintain the Norwegian length contrast and thereby close mid vowels in syllables with target lengthening consonants. Second, we test the hypothesis whereby the same students maintain the Norwegian acoustic system and thereby limit the distance between the variants of rounded vowels. On the basis of these results, and by comparing with data from the advanced students in Oslo, we aim at sketching the first version of the acquisition path of a phenomenon that is widespread, yet considered too marginal to be explicitly taught in the Norwegian classroom.   La maîtrise de la variation phonologique en L2/L3 constitue une partie intégrante de la compétence de l’apprenant (Bayley & Regan 2004) qui vise à une production quasi native. L’acquisition de la variation n’intervient que tardivement dans l’apprentissage et se voit souvent freinée par la pauvreté du stimulus (Lyche & Detey 2016). La question de la variation se situe ainsi au cœur de l’acquisition d’une L2/L3 qu’il s’agisse de la production ou de la perception où un ensemble d’études mettent à jour l’intérêt d’un input à fort degré de variabilité dans l’entraînement perceptif sur le plan phonético-phonologique (pour une revue, voir Detey 2009). Dans ce travail, nous envisagerons l’acquisition du schwa chez des apprenants norvégiens. Le schwa s’impose avec la liaison comme un phénomène hautement variable qui intervient directement dans les problèmes de perception du français L2/L3 (Stridfeldt 2005). De nombreuses études consacrées à l’acquisition de la liaison montrent que la liaison variable ne s’acquiert qu’à un stade avancé de l’apprentissage (Howard 2013), mais peu d’études ont porté sur l’acquisition du schwa, ce qui pourrait s’expliquer selon Hannahs (2007 : 69) par le fait que « the conditioning factors surrounding variable schwa are not exclusively phonological – a not inconsiderable role is played by other factors such as style, register, formality and sociolinguistic context ». Sur la base de deux corpus d’apprenants norvégiens, celui de Tromsø (16 locuteurs, niveau A2) et celui d’Oslo (7 locuteurs, niveau B1/B2), nous présenterons des données sur le taux de présence et absence du schwa dans la parole conversationnelle après avoir brièvement envisagé le traitement fourni par les manuels et la question de l’input. Nous nous limiterons aux deux positions dans lesquelles la présence d’un schwa phonologique est incontestée en français L1 : dans un monosyllabe et dans la syllabe initiale de polysyllabe. À l’aide du codage IPFC-schwa en cours de développement (Racine, Detey, & Andreassen 2015), nous examinerons l’impact possible de deux facteurs phonologiques, notamment celui du contexte segmental et celui du contexte phonotactique gauche (Andreassen & Lyche 2016). Nous mettrons en évidence des parallèles avec l’acquisition de la liaison (Andreassen & Lyche 2015), présenterons les différents stades d’apprentissage et soulignerons le lien étroit entre acquisition syntaxique et acquisition phonologique.

  Si le schwa a fait couler beaucoup d’encre dans la littérature sur la phonologie du français L1, la situation est bien différente pour ce qui est de la phonologie du français langue étrangère. Hannahs (2007:69) propose que cette lacune est, du moins en partie, due au fait que « the conditioning factors surrounding variable schwa are not exclusively phonological – a not inconsiderable role is played by other factors such as style, register, formality and sociolinguistic context ». Avec l’établissement du programme de recherche IPFC (Detey & Kawaguchi, 2008; Racine, Detey, Zay, & Kawaguchi, 2012), nous avons accès à une base de données qui permet d’étudier le comportement phonologique du schwa tout en prenant en compte les facteurs mentionnés par Hannahs (2007). L’objective du présent travail est de faire une première analyse du traitement du schwa tel qu’il se présente dans la production des apprenants du français L3 en Norvège. Sur la base des deux corpus de Tromsø (16 locuteurs, niveau A2) et d’Oslo (7 locuteurs, niveau B1/B2), nous présenterons des données sur le taux de présence et absence du schwa dans la parole conversationnelle.   The dataset is based on data from 12 Norwegian learners, 6 from Tromsø (level A2) and 6 from Oslo (level B1/B2), participants in the ongoing project IPFC: Interphonologie du français contemporain (http://cblle.tufs.ac.jp/ ipfc/index.php?id=2). Data are extracted from three registers: text reading, semi-formal conversation and free conversation. The dataset consists of four Excel-files, plus a read-me file. The files "Enchainement_text" and "Enchainement_conversation" contain all potential occurrences of enchainement (rightward consonant linking across a word boundary) observed in the three registers, as well as (non) enchainement of the consonant in the various cases. The files "Liaison_text" and "Liaison_conversation" contain all potential occurrences of liaison observed in the three registers. It further contains information on (non) liaison and (non) enchainement in the various cases, as well as, when a liaison consonant is realised, the type and quality of the consonant produced.

  S’il est admis que la graphie joue un rôle en phonologie au niveau des représentations (Taft 2006), elle intervient également à différents degrés selon les registres avec des performances spécifiques en lecture. La liaison et le schwa en français sont des témoins exemplaires dans cette influence (Durand et al. 2009) : la réalisation de la liaison et du schwa progresse avec le degré de formalité des échanges et culmine en lecture lorsque le locuteur se trouve en contact direct avec la graphie. Des travaux antérieurs sur l’acquisition du français L1 confirment le rôle de la graphie dans l’apprentissage des deux phénomènes et font état d’une étape spécifique lorsque l’enfant atteint l’âge de scolarité (Wauquier 2010, Racine et al. 2013). Il semble alors que la littératie altère les représentations mentales des mots telles qu’elles ont été construites au cours du développement langagier. Dans ces conditions, on s’attendrait à ce que les adultes non-lecteurs aient un système proche de celui des enfants non-scolarisés : dans une grammaire pas ou peu influencée par la graphie, le comportement des variables phonologiques est-il dirigé par des contraintes intra-grammaticales uniquement ? De surcroît, dans quelle direction cette grammaire se modifie-t-elle sans feedback négatif ? Si l’on a pu observer des similitudes entre les deux groupes au niveau de la liaison (Boutin & Lyche 2014), aucun travail n’analyse le comportement du schwa. Dans cette étude, nous envisagerons le comportement du schwa dans deux corpus de non-lecteurs : des jeunes enfants et des adultes locuteurs de français louisianais. Par le biais d’une analyse acoustique, nous montrerons une convergence dans deux domaines : (1) le timbre du schwa est sujet à assimilation aussi bien chez les enfants que chez les locuteurs louisianais (venir [vini]); (2) un schwa épenthétique apparaît régulièrement pour simplifier les groupes consonantiques (blond [bəlõ]). Si l’épenthèse de schwa a pour fonction de résoudre la complexité syllabique, la propension à l’assimilation du timbre suggère que le schwa est doté d’une représentation moins riche que les autres voyelles. De plus, si les jeunes enfants acquièrent graduellement les suites consonantiques et le timbre cible, la persistance des stratégies de simplification chez les Louisianais suggère la grammaticalisation de traits développementaux dans une situation non-surveillée.

  In adult French phonology, schwa is a separate vowel category that either deletes or merges with /œ/ in the output. This thesis revolves around the distribution, categorisation and acquisition of schwa. We test two main hypotheses on the basis of Swiss French adult and child data: one, that schwa does not constitute a separate category in early child language, and two, that the acquisition of schwa alternation, consonant sequencing and the reduction of non-prominent syllables are intertwined. The analysis of inter-adult judgement and production data shows that the distribution of schwa and /œ/ is near complementary. The implication for the language acquisition process is that there are few indications in the input that output [œ] needs to be split into two categories. The analysis of child-directed speech shows that the rate of schwa alternation is lower compared to inter-adult speech. The implication for the language acquisition process is that the categorical distinction between schwa and /œ/ is blurred in the child’s input. The analysis of spontaneous and semi-controlled child language data shows that children in all ages, from 2;03 to 3;05, prefer the output variant with schwa. Schwa alternation in spontaneous speech is rare, even in children who master consonant sequencing and syllable reduction. As for children who do not master these aspects of phonology, no spontaneous alternation is attested. In a semi-controlled setting, where the child is exposed to the variant without schwa, the older children, who master consonant sequencing and syllable deletion, are sensitive to the input and produce the variant without schwa. As for the children who do not master these aspects, sensitivity to the input is low. However, in the rare cases where they do show sensitivity, they modify the target form in conformity with their current grammar.
