Text development seminar in area studies

Text development seminar in area studies organised by Professor Atle L. Wold at ILOS. The text development seminar is a compulsory component of the PhD programme.

Overview

Text development seminars organised by ILOS require all participants to present a draft text and to comment on one of the texts presented by the other participants. We also expect all participants to read all submitted texts and to take part in the general discussion of each text, which follows on to the main commentary. For this seminar, participants are invited to submit parts of a chapter or a draft article for their PhD theses.

The submitted texts should be about 10 pages, and need to be genuine drafts; texts that are in the making, not completed chapters or articles. All submitted texts will be circulated within the group of participants one week ahead of the seminar to ensure that everyone has time to read them, and the course teacher will appoint one main opponent for each submitted text.

The duration of the seminar will depend on the number of PhD-candidates who register, but is set preliminary to 6 hours including a lunch break. We need at least 2 participants to run the seminar, and the maximum number of participants is 6.

Further information about text development seminars at ILOS can be found here: Text development seminars

Participation (presenting and commenting) yields: 2 ECTS.

Organisation of the seminar:

For each participant and submitted text, we will adhere to the same four-stage format:

  • Presentation by the participant who submitted the text (about 10 minutes)
  • Commentary by the main opponent (about 10 minutes)
  • General discussion (10-20 minutes)
  • Summary (about 5 minutes)
  • Short break, and then a repeat of the above four stages for the next submitted text

Further information about the organisation of the seminar will be provided to registered participants once the deadline for signing up has passed.

To register

The deadline for signing up is 10 June.

Note that 10 June is also the deadline for submitting texts. Please send your text to: Professor Atle L. Wold: a.l.wold@ilos.uio.no

Professor Wold will also be happy to answer any queries you may have about the seminar.
