In their article "Undivided Ukraine: Evidence of Rallying Effects and an Emerging National Consensus" VALREF project member Eric S.Herron and Khrystyna Pelchar (West Virginia University, USA) challenge the dominant view of Ukraine as a divided society, characterized by its differences.
The authors analyze almost a decade of public opinion data to explore how key events have produced rallying effects and changes in societal behavior. They suggest that the challenges of the last decade acted as "rallying points" and have unified Ukrainians. The authors argue that "rallying has varied across regions but merged over time, potentially uniting Ukraine into a new cultural identity with the onset of the Russian invasion".
