The 2nd Summer School in the History of the English Language (SSHOE) will be held on 24-29 June 2024, Campus Blindern, University of Oslo. The 1st SSHOE took place at the University of Cardiff in 2023.

The organiser is the University of Oslo's Department of Literature, Area Studies, and European Languages.

The summer school primarily targets undergraduate students with little to no background in the History of the English Language. Experienced instructors from various European universities will offer classes on various aspects of the history of the English language from its beginnings through to the present day. All classes will be taught in English, and some instructors will adopt a hands-on format. There will be no tests and participation will not translate into ECTS points, but participants will receive a certificate of participation. The programme will feature four full teaching days, one full-day outing, and one half-day outing, with evenings free. In addition, there will be a few online activities ahead of the week in Oslo.

Participation is free. Through the kind generosity of the Anders Jahre Foundation, participants will be treated to lunch and tea/coffee every day, a dinner as well as the outing and a travel pass for the Oslo area.

Participants must fund their own international travel and accommodation. The organisers will be happy to advise on travel options and budget accommodation in the Oslo area but regret that they cannot facilitate accommodation in student halls.

Please note that the organisers will cap participants numbers at 25 and will give priority to students from the instructors' universities. Reserve your spot early to avoid disappointment.

Blindern campus, view toward the PA Munch building

Oslo is the capital of Norway and the country's most populous city. SSHOE will take place on the University of Oslo's Blindern campus, located just off Oslo city centre and easily reached by metro or tram from just about any location in the city.

Oslo airport at Gardermoen, Norway's main airport, is located 35 km/22 miles northeast of Oslo. Coach and train services connecting the airport to the city centre operate throughout the day and take about 30 mins. Some low-cost airlines fly into the smaller airport at Sandefjord. This airport is located 110 km/68 miles south of Oslo. Coaches and trains also serve this airport; the travel time to Oslo is just under 2 hrs by either means of transport.

Although Norway is a Scandinavian country, no polar bears roam the streets of Oslo. You may expect late June to feature dry and sunny weather with day temperatures well above 20° Celsius. The sun will set at around 10:45 p.m. and nights will be bright.
