About the seminar

Media and communication industries often present themselves as clean and green, but do, in fact, contribute significantly to environmental problems. In this seminar, we discuss issues of sustainability and climate change and their relevance for  disconnection research.

The first presenter is Benedetta Brevini, author of the recent book Is AI Good for the Planet? In the book she exposes the environmental cost of AI and argues for a 'green tech literacy' to raise awareness about overconsumption and the importance of responsible energy consumption.

Christian Schwarzenegger will present research on disobedient practices such as repairing, non-use and disconnection. Drawing from qualitative interviews, he discusses to what degree such practices can be understood as a form of activism with the impetus to shape digitization and datafication in a more sustainable way.

Participants
