About the seminar

The topic of digital disconnection serves as a meeting point for researchers from different fields. However, recent contributions have begun to discuss research on this topic as a distinct subfield, assessing epistemologies, conceptualisations and theories. More such work is on its way.

In a recent contribution in Media, Culture and Society, eight young researchers maps digital disconnection research along a "pluralistic continuum" and argue for multidisciplinarity and complementarity.

In this seminar, we have invited two contributors working in different parts of the field to offer their perspectives on the theoretical and conceptual evolvement of disconnection research.

Lise-Marie Nassen studies digital well-being, specifically the relationship between digital disconnection and psychological well-being. In her talk, she will draw on the recently published review article: Opt-out, abstain, unplug. A systematic review of the voluntary digital disconnection literature.

Mariek Vanden Abeele investigates digital culture through a combined lens of media psychology and media sociology. In her talk, she will explore the potential for theory-building in the intersection of mobile media and disconnection studies.

The seminar takes place May 7, 14.00-15.00 Norway time/CET.
