CFP: ECREA pre-conference 2024

Digital Content Creators, Platforms and Changing Cultural Institutions

The two research projects Follow Me: The Influence of Danish Digital Media Creators and GLOBAL NATIVES? Serving Young Audiences on Global Media Platforms, are co-organising the following ECREA pre-conference:

Title

Digital Content Creators, Platforms and Changing Cultural Institutions

Where

Ljubljana, Slovenia

When

Tuesday 24 September 2024, from 09:00-15:00

This pre-conference is timed to coincide with the start of the ECREA Conference

Format

One-day physical event

Theme

Commercial and global platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X form and facilitate cultural productions that can be informative, fun, educative, practical, disturbing, and disruptive. Their interface logics, algorithmic curation, governance regimes, business models, and uses of data set the terms for content creators and inform their cultural productions and communications. Platforms also generate complex media ecologies with each other and with users, content creators, and cultural institutions that produce and circulate content.

These media ecologies provide cultural institutions (like media organisations, museums, libraries, theatres, concert halls, cultural houses etc) with both opportunities and challenges. The popularity and wide use of platforms has led to a web of inter-dependencies influencing how cultural institutions operate, communicate, and create content.

This pre-conference addresses what kind of changes platforms instigate with and within cultural institutions. Contributions are invited to engage with questions that concern how the power to represent and communicate is affected by platforms, how cultural institutions use platforms, how they create content, how they form affiliations with content creators/influencers, and how they communicate with audiences and users. We are especially interested in papers that engage with one or more of the following themes:

  • Case studies of cultural institutions and their content creation on global platforms
  • Studies investigating the platformed interactions between cultural institutions and their users
  • Studies investigating the internal processes, hierarchies, and power dynamics of cultural institutions’ platform communication
  • Studies of collaborations/affiliations between cultural institutions and digital content creators/online profiles/influencers
  • Conceptual and critical discussions and interventions
  • Methodological discussions and interventions.

We particularly encourage PhD students and young scholars to submit work-in-progress to the preconference
