Listening to the 20th Century and Beyond

This three day conference explores the question of musical listening with regard to a wide variety of musical genres and artists. 

Time and place: Nov. 11, 2014 9:30 AM–Nov. 13, 2014 7:30 PM, Auditorium U 35 in Helga Engs house

A wide variety of musical genres will be explored from Ligeti to The Beatles, from Mahler to Nordheim, from James Brown and jazz standards to Stockhausen, Boulez, Maja Ratkje and Nordic folk Music.

Listening to the twentieth century and beyond - Course (presentation based variant)

Autumn 2014: Course given at Department of Musicology in advance of the conference. MUS2501 - Current musicological research.

Course start: Tuesday, 2 September 2014 (opening seminar)

Topic

Music from the 20th century and up to the present day has challenged and changed the way we listen to music. It has also transformed how musicians and composers draw on the listening experience in the creative process. This course explores these issues through listening to a wide variety of genres, from Ligeti to the The Beatles, Mahler to Nordheim, James Brown and jazz standards to Maja Ratkje and Nordic folk music.

Evaluation: Students are required to present a 20-minute paper during the conference.
