Early Ibsen Publications on Their Way to the Library at the Centre for Ibsen Studies!

The library at the Centre for Ibsen Studies (CIS) has acquired a collector’s edition of "Illustreret Nyhedsblads Nytaarsgave" (Illustrated news journal’s new year’s gift) from the 1860s.

The library at the Centre for Ibsen Studies (CIS) is now the proud owner of the books that the weekly publication "Illustreret Nyhedsblad" presented to its subscribers as a New Year’s gift for the years 1860–1863. This volume contains the first editions of Henrik Ibsen’s poem cycle On the Heights (1860), the epic poem Terje Vigen (1862), and the play "Love’s Comedy(1862). Publisher was the journal’s editor Paul Botten-Hansen. The books were printed by Hans Jacob Jensen.

"Love’s Comedy"

The first edition of "Love’s Comedy" has an interesting story. According to "Henrik Ibsens skrifter", the book was mailed to subscribers on the last day of the year, 31 December 1862, and offered for sale in bookstores at the same time. The library at the Centre for Ibsen Studies now owns copies of both the separate edition for sale in stores, and the “gift.”

We are very proud to be able to give researchers and students access to these rare copies. Come by and take a look!
