Call for papers - The XVth International Ibsen Conference, June 24-26, 2024

The XVth International Ibsen Conference on “The Intermedial Ibsen” will be held in Nanjing, China on June 24-26, 2024. The conference is hosted by Nanjing University, in cooperation with the Centre for Ibsen Studies, University of Oslo. The deadline for submitting abstracts is January 1st, 2024.

The theme of XVth International Ibsen Conference will be “The Intermedial Ibsen”. In light of new developments in intermedial studies in literature and arts, the intermedial approaches to Ibsen may include the representation of artists in Ibsen’s plays, intermedial references to music and architecture, the Ibsen paintings by Edvard Munch and other artists, film adaptations based on Ibsen’s plays, remediations of Ibsen in musicals and dance theatre, and intercultural performancesof Ibsen, just to name a few.

We encourage all participants to engage with the main theme to enrich the conference discussion. Papers may address, but are by no means restricted to, the following thematic streams:

  • Intermedial Practice and the Canonization of Ibsen’s Plays
  • Ethical Criticism of Ibsen’s Plays
  • Directing Ibsen’s Plays
  • Comparative Studies on Ibsen and Chekhov
  • Ibsen Across Cultures: Exploring Intercultural Adaptations, Translations, Teaching, and Research
  • Re-visioning Ibsen: Stage, Media and Gender
  • What’s Wrong with the Well-made Play? Form and Structure in Ibsen’s Dramatic Writing
  • Ibsen’s “Debate” in the Intellectual History of Human Civilization
  • Representation of Ibsen’s “Body” in Different Media
  • Ibsen’s Plays in Germany
  • Changing Forms and Transforming Political Notions of Ibsen’s Plays

Instructions for abstract submission

Submitted papers should be centered on the conference theme, and paper presentations should be planned for a maximum of 20 minutes. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words long and should include a brief bio. The deadline is January 1st, 2024.
