Goal for the seminar

This one-day event aims to bring together scholars and interested students to discuss the terminology and approaches we use to talk and write about issues related to race in today’s academic community in Norway. Moreover, we seek to consider which terminological and discursive choices can best support antiracism.

Terminology and discourse about race and racism is potentially important for all of the core areas of academic work: research, teaching, and dissemination.

This event will provide a space to discuss how members of the UiO Faculty of Humanities and the Norwegian academic community more generally relate to issues of race in their scholarly writing, their teaching, and their public dissemination practices.

The terminology that is considered appropriate has changed over time in both the Norwegian language and the English language. Språkrådet provides an answer to the frequently asked question “Hvilke ord kan brukes om hudfarge?”, stating that this is a topic where changes are ongoing and new norms continue to emerge.

Språkrådet’s answer to this question explicitly notes the influence of English on Norwegian norms, an issue of special relevance within academia. Both English and Norwegian terminology and norms are impactful for scholarship, teaching, and learning in Norway, and we aim to discuss changing norms across languages.

The seminar will not prescribe ‘correct’ or ‘incorrect’ ways of speaking and writing, but rather invite open discussion and reflection across disciplines, languages and perspectives.

The plenaries will be held in English. Discussion in Norwegian is also welcome.

It is possible to freely join the seminar, however sign-up is required if you would like lunch. Deadline for lunch registration: 27 February.
