Information for Participants / Call for participation

We are looking for participants for our research project
Family's heteroglossic 'safe spaces':
Constructing social spaces for multilingual competence and practices

Do Somali and Norwegian OR German and Norwegian (maybe along with other languages) play a role in your family?
Is your child / Are your children currently enrolled in kindergarten or school?

We are looking to understand how families where more than one language is relevant, organize their everyday life and the upbringing of their children. What is important for you and your family, when you think about the languages that are relevant for you? This project is one of several projects dealing with multilingual families at the Center for Multilingualism in Society across the lifespan (MultiLing), University of Oslo.

Would you be interested to take part in our project?
Participation, what does it mean?

In the course of one year, I would like to have talks and interviews with parents and children (and other members of the family, ....), dealing with language use and your experiences. We would agree on 8 to 10 dates to do that. In between, I would ask you to record some interactions in your family (recording devices can be provided). We will talk together about a choice of situations, and afterwards we will listen to some of the recordings together. The recordings, talks and interviews will be analyzed to better understand how multilingual families organize their lifes with and around languages.

1 interview / talk with parents / caregivers

8ā€“10 short interviews (about 1 every month)

Recordings in your family (once / twice per week)

The first interviews should start in mid-April, depending on your availability!

What happens to the recordings?

All recordings are only used within the project team and nobody else will have access to the data. Of course, all data will be treated confidentially. In publications and talks, no participants will be identifiable ā€“ but I will of course inform you, which publications were produced in the course of the project.

The project should be finished by the end of 2018 ā€“ only anonymized data will be kept beyond that point. This study is registered with the Data Protection Official for Research, Norwegian Social Science Data Services: NSD 45533. Your participation in this project is of course voluntary and can be ended without stating any reasons (then all data will be anonymized right away). There is no exchange with schools / kindergartens (or other official bodies) on the project contents or participants.
