Abstract

Intonation in L3 French: Speakers of L1 Norwegian and L2 English

In this paper, we look at intonation contours of declarative utterances produced by Norwegian speakers for whom French is a L3 and English is a L2. Norwegian has a rising pitch contour in this context, and we show that Norwegian learners tend to transfer the Norwegian contour to French. Our study also indicates that having acquired the falling contour of English might, in certain cases, facilitate the acquisition of the French contour.
